22 THE FIRST ENCOUNTER

U

sually, Avery hid her emotions well by keeping her face blank. But today was different. The anger and fear that welled up inside her began to show. Her eyes were narrowed and cold, and her lips had tightened. A chill of apprehension washed over her as she stepped out from under the small bridge to make her way to Adelaide's Cottage to deliver the heart-breaking news.

‘Are you all right, Avery?’

‘I am fine, Darion. It's only the lack of sleep. You don't have to fret about me.’

‘I’m worried. You’re pale, and you are trembling. When this is over, you must rest.’

‘Asanopirh, Oren just saw a group of soldiers rushing through the glade. We have to act swiftly now. We can't afford to hesitate,’ shouted Bilobeal.

‘Aye, we're coming. You best stay at the bridge. I'll send you Hugh and Glen to observe the situation,’ replied Asanopirh.

‘Are you ready, Avery, or would you rather secure the cottage?’ whispered Sorcha in a soft and measured voice.

‘No, Sorcha, I am ready to face the Laird and his men. After all, this is what we trained for,’ said Avery with cold determination, signalling her friends to follow.

We have chosen the right time to return to the Cottage. Avery thought as she watched the evening mist spreading over the Cottage. The woods supplied perfect cover as Elves took position around the Cottage and on top of the barn. Ghilli Duh, Oren, and Laratbogh lined up at the edge of the forest, ready to take on any intruder who Dared to approach the Cottage.

‘Avery and Ursula, please go inside and brief everybody about the latest development. And please make certain that they sit tight. Tell them to keep up their routine, so our visitors remain unaware of our presence,’ Asanopirh instructed.

‘Aye, what about Hugh and Glen? Shouldn't they accompany us?’ Avery asked.

‘No, the lads are securing the brook and the bridge with Bilobeal and his men. Go, go now,’ said Asanopirh and sank back into the mist.

Avery and Ursula heard Adelaide talking to Annette as they approached the Cottage.

‘This is the strangest weather. How can we have such dense fog after all the sunshine we had today?’

‘You are right, Adelaide, it is very unusual, and it appeared out of nowhere. I've never seen anything like it before,’ Annette remarked.

‘Shush, hold it,’ Adelaide stopped her. ‘Did you hear this?’

‘Hear what?’

‘It sounded as if the back door opened. Is that you, Madge?’

‘I am right here,’ Madge replied. I just put the kettle on the fire for some tea. What's the matter?’

‘Where are John and Bhaltair?’ ‘They went to the barn to check on

the animals.’

‘Well, then we have a problem. I could swear that I heard the back door open. Let's hope the enchantments haven't been compromised,’ whispered Adelaide.

She walked up to the fireplace, picked up the poker, and lifted it over her head, ready to strike.

‘You can put the poker down. It's just us,’ said Avery as she walked into the sitting room.

‘Goodness, you gave us quite a scare, Avery.
